I was pregnant with my first child when my ex husband and I bought out his business partner in his Takapuna hair and beauty salon. That salon was the beginning of my long passion with all things business. At the time I devoured everything I could about business, marketing, staff and HR, leadership. I wanted to know how to make our little salon successful.
The kids were 5 and 7 when I started my bookkeeping business. By that time we’d sold the salon and I found myself newly seperated with a new business. Over 8 years I grew the business to a team of 5 before selling it it in 2015. That business is still around today which I hope is a testament to the systems I created, the staff I hired, the brand I built and the business model I adopted.
What a ride it’s been since those early days. I’ve learned so much, applied it, learned from mistakes (mine and others).
I haven’t always enjoyed it, let’s be honest. There were times when I had to borrow money to pay wages, and plenty of times I considered chucking it all in and going to get a job because who can be bothered with this sh*t. But every one of those times I persevered, I learned what worked and what didn’t, I got stronger, and I kept going.
Along the way I kind of fell into business coaching. You get to see under the hood of so many different businesses as a bookkeeper and accounting software consultant. You become trusted and you learn what works and what doesn’t so much. I am fascinated by business concepts and with the people who run businesses.
When I turned 40 I still didn’t know “what I wanted to be when I grew up”. My career path seemed a bit windy-curvy to that point. But funnily enough, everything that I’ve done has come together quite nicely in my capacity as a business coach.
Earlier this year I turned 50 and my boys turned 16 and 18. I can hardly believe it. I now have young adults in the house, off doing all manner of things to cause slight anxiety to his mother. To say the time has flown is true, however it also feels like it’s been a long time since those early days.
I absolutely love what I do these days and what I stand for in my business coaching, which is profitable and sustainable businesses that enhance and enable amazing lives.
I work predominantly with bookkeepers around the world who are wanting to transform their bookkeeping practices into thriving businesses, with profit and growth systems to unlock more time, money and profit. If there’s one industry, and one type of business owner, that I get, it’s bookkeepers and the bookkeeping and accounting industry. I’m fascinated with it, I love the technology of the industry.
The space is ever and rapidly changing, enabling tedious and time-consuming jobs to become efficient and simple.
